The Parlement of Brittany building

Designed by Salomon de Brosse, the Parlement building is a key building in the heritage of Rennes, revealing a unique example of 17th-century pictorial art depicting the history of Brittany. The great Parisian artists adorned what is now the Court of Justice with sumptuous French-style ceilings, gilded panelling and allegorical paintings. The Main Chamber is the pearl of this exceptional interior decor.
Partially destroyed by fire in 1994, it was immaculately restored and reopened to the public in 1999.
Before your visit, you will see a short film in the Tourist Information Centre that tells the story of the fire and the restoration work on the decorative features.

Le Parlement de Bretagne

Tour of historic centre

Setting off from the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre you will explore the narrow, winding streets lined with colourful half-timbered houses dating back to the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. You will visit the city's defensive heritage, embodied in the twin tower gatehouse of Portes Mordelaises gates - the last remaining vestige of the entrance to the mediaeval town. Flamboyant Gothic architecture adorns the facade of the Chapel of Saint-Yves. The two royal squares designed by the architect of Louis XV stand alongside outstanding townhouses built for members of Brittany's Parliament.

The Champs-Libres Centre

Opened in 2006, this Mecca of Breton and scientific culture houses the Museum of Brittany, a Science Museum, Rennes Public Library and a conference hall. Designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc, the building is formed around a hall with permanent exhibitions (Bretagne est Univers [Brittany - a world in microcosm], Espace Dreyfus, on the 19th-century Dreyfus Affair, a geology exhibition, Roches Armoricaines and Laboratoire de Merlin, or Merlin’s Laboratory) and temporary exhibitions, the library and the conference hall.

The Museum of Brittany [Musée de Bretagne]

Located on the first floor, the Museum of Brittany is based around three permanent exhibition rooms (Bretagne est Univers, Bretagne des Mille et Une images [Brittany through a thousand pictures and Espace Dreyfus) and two rooms that house temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The history of Brittany, its traditions and inhabitants from the Paleolithic era to the 21st century, is laid out here in great detail. Several sequences are devoted to each historical period, illustrated with various display cases: the Bronze Age, Brittany at the time of the Dukes, the French Revolution, the two wars… The chronological sequencing highlights how periods of isolation alternated with periods of more open contact with the world. Sedan chair, box bed, china, embroidered waistcoat, tractor, model trawler, minitel – each object illustrates one of the facets of Breton culture, the deepest roots of which are showcased here.

The Science Museum [L'Espace des Sciences]

La Salle Eurêka on the ground floor houses temporary exhibitions.
Le Laboratoire De Merlin, just beside it, is an exploratory space for all the family, where visitors can discover 29 different experiments. The history of the Massif armoricain is told in la salle de la Terre [Earth room]: 650 million years of geological upheavals in rocks and images. In each room, scientific guides are on hand to make this information accessible to all. The Planetarium, located above the foyer at the top of the dome, will thrust you into the unbelievable dimension of the cosmos.

The Museum of Fine Arts [Musée des Beaux Arts]

The Museum of Fine Arts is a must-see for anyone interested in the cultural life of Rennes. The serene atmosphere invites the visitor to discover masterpieces of European painting and sculpture from the 14th to the 21st century, and the Mediterranean, Egyptian and Roman Archaeology collections. Some of these paintings are internationally renowned: 'The Newborn' by Georges de La Tour (early 17th century) and Peter-Paul Rubens’ ‘The Tiger Hunt’. The arcades of the patio are once again home to sculptures, including masterpieces by Veronese, Alfred Sisley, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Gauguin, Paul Sérusier and Pablo Picasso.

The Ecomusée du Pays de Rennes

Bintinais farm, which used to be one of the largest farms in Rennes, now houses an ecomuseum, which portrays five centuries of Rennes’ history over twenty hectares and 1,200 m² of exhibition space.
The permanent exhibition presents the many facets of Breton life in an original and entertaining way, through history, ethnology, science and technology: work, leisure, language, clothes, food, lifestyle, and agricultural produce and techniques.
Some of the land has been returned to cultivation in order to showcase the key stages of Brittany’s agricultural development. There are 19 rustic species of livestock, a host of plants that were cultivated both in the past and today, and 75 varieties of local cider apples, all illustrating the development of agriculture in Brittany.
The Ecomuseum also regularly organises temporary exhibitions.
